This is a basic diagram of how memory works. Each section is labeled with a number which corresponds with the number list below the image.

- Information is perceived using your 5 senses and experiences.
- The Sensory Register filters the information you perceive and sends it to Short Term Memory.
- Temporary storage of information in Short Term Memory can last up to 30 seconds and the information is stored in chunks of 5-9 items at a time.
- Rehearsal, Coding and Imaging are three of the methods you can use to transfer information from Short Term Memory into Long Term Memory.
- Long Term Memory, where information is permanently stored, has no known limits on its capacity.
- You need to retrieve information from Long Term Memory into Short Term Memory in order to apply it, whether it is an answer to a test question or making a left turn in a car.
