Memory Flowchart
This is a basic diagram of how memory works. Each section is labeled with a number which corresponds with the number list below the image.

  1. Information is perceived using your 5 senses and experiences.
  2. The Sensory Register filters the information you perceive and sends it to Short Term Memory.
  3. Temporary storage of information in Short Term Memory can last up to 30 seconds and the information is stored in chunks of 5-9 items at a time.
  4. Rehearsal, Coding and Imaging are three of the methods you can use to transfer information from Short Term Memory into Long Term Memory.
  5. Long Term Memory, where information is permanently stored, has no known limits on its capacity.
  6. You need to retrieve information from Long Term Memory into Short Term Memory in order to apply it, whether it is an answer to a test question or making a left turn in a car.
